Friday Family Film Night: NEXT GOAL WINS review

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing NEXT GOAL WINS (2023), a biographical sports comedy from director, Taika Waititi, with writing credits to Taika Waititi and Iain Morris.  

A hot-headed, down-on-his-luck football coach named Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) is sent to American Samoa to lead their national team, widely considered one of the worst squads in the world. Facing the daunting task of turning the inexperienced, disorganized group into a competitive team capable of winning a single game, Rongen is forced to shift his focus from professional ego to understanding the unique cultural spirit of his players. Through this journey, he discovers that the team’s true victory lies not in the scoreboard, but in the profound personal transformation and newfound joy they find through playing the sport together.  The film clocks in at 1 h 44 m, is rated PG-13 and currently streaming on Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
