In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER (1999), a satirical romantic comedy from writers Brian Peterson and Jamie Babbit, the film is directed by Jamie Babbit.
A bubbly high school cheerleader named Megan Bloomfield (Natasha Lyonne) finds her life turned upside down when her parents and friends stage an intervention to send her to a conversion therapy camp. Under the strict supervision of the camp's dogmatic leader, Megan is forced to participate in bizarre, gender-coded exercises designed to "cure" her of her perceived homosexuality. However, the plan backfires when Megan begins to develop genuine feelings for a rebellious fellow camper named Graham (Clea DuVall), leading her to embrace her true identity despite the camp's oppressive atmospheres. The film clocks in at 1 h 25 m, is rated R and is currently streaming on Peacock but also available on other streaming services. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
