Could the next October 7th-style attack come from the West Bank? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will sue Haaretz and journalist Shlomi Eldar over a report claiming the United Arab Emirates warned him about Hamas ahead of October 7th. Netanyahu’s office calls the story “completely fabricated” and politically motivated. Haaretz says it stands by its reporting.
Iran says it fired ballistic missiles at a US-used base in Jordan and attacked ten ships in the Strait of Hormuz, after the United States destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. Jordan says it intercepted almost all of the missiles, while renewed fighting has pushed Brent crude close to 100 dollars a barrel.
At the same time, Iran’s oil revenues are rapidly drying up under the US naval blockade. No Iranian oil has passed through the Strait of Hormuz since mid-July, while offshore stocks could run out as early as next month and inflation has climbed above 80 percent.
Qatar has posted its biggest quarterly budget deficit in almost a decade as the war devastates its gas exports. Unlike Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Qatar has no alternative export route around the Strait of Hormuz, leaving much of its LNG effectively trapped. The IMF now expects the Qatari economy to shrink by more than eight percent this year.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is defending a new trade ban targeting Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, despite Israel’s decision to close the British consulate in eastern Jerusalem in response. Britain’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has called the move “a dark day for British Jews.” Miliband, who is Jewish, says he respects the chief rabbi — but disagrees.
