The United States has dramatically expanded sanctions on Iran, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has dubbed the campaign “Operation Economic Outcast,”. Iran’s currency was already trading at a record low of more than two million rials to the dollar before the new measures were announced. Catherine Perez-Shakdam, Executive Director of the Forum for Foreign Relations and Chief Policy Adviser at Stop The Hate UK, joins Israel in Ten to discuss whether Iran’s economic crisis could now become a regime crisis — and why she believes the Islamic Republic may not survive another Christmas.

Iran has vowed to retaliate against what it calls an “economic terrorist attack.” An oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging its engine room, although the crew was reported safe. Iran’s Houthi allies in Yemen have also warned countries not to comply with the new US sanctions.

Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa has hailed Washington’s decision to remove his country from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, calling it the end of a “dark” chapter. The move lifts major economic restrictions and could help attract foreign investment for reconstruction. Washington has also revoked the terrorist designation of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, the former al-Qaeda-linked group once led by Sharaa.

Israel says drugs have been discovered hidden inside humanitarian food aid entering Gaza. COGAT says World Central Kitchen staff found around 600 grams of hashish, along with other illegal substances, concealed inside cans of peppers. Separately, around 150 Gazans with dual citizenship and their companions left the Strip yesterday through an Israeli-coordinated evacuation via Kerem Shalom and Jordan. COGAT says more than 6,000 Palestinians have left Gaza since February.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has congratulated Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev after his party won the most seats in parliamentary elections. Netanyahu said Kazakhstan’s decision to join the Abraham Accords last November had opened a new chapter in relations and pledged to deepen strategic ties between the two countries.
