Well, friends… Halloween is getting closer, and I have 7 British TV and movie picks to help you choose your own level of spooky!

In this episode, we work our way through cozy mysteries, a gothic period drama, an actual Halloween detective case, and a darker supernatural story across PBS MASTERPIECE, BritBox, and Acorn TV.

Expect witches, mysterious inns, family secrets, a psychic fair, and a few familiar detectives who refuse to mind their own business.

I’m sharing my honest thoughts, overall ratings, and cozy ratings with gentle spoilers and content notes to help you choose what suits your evening.

And keep reading for three bonus Halloween books that didn’t make it into the recording!

In This Episode

Choosing Your Own Level of Spooky

We chat about:

* Why a Halloween watch doesn’t have to be horror

* The difference between my overall ratings and cozy ratings

* How beautiful settings, humor, and familiar characters can bring comfort to a darker mystery

* Which selections work as standalone watches and which need a little catching up first

* When you can keep crafting and when you might want to put the yarn down!

Both ratings are out of five. My cozy ratings describe my personal viewing experience, rather than an age rating or a guarantee about content.

Coziest Halloween Mystery: Marple — “The Pale Horse”

Our first pick is Agatha Christie’s Marple: “The Pale Horse,” starring Julia McKenzie.

We chat about:

* Father Gorman’s murder and a mysterious list of names

* An inn run by three women who claim they can kill through black magic

* Witchcraft, rituals, village history, and plenty of red herrings

* Why Julia McKenzie’s calm, sharp-minded Miss Marple feels like walking alongside your granny

* Why you may want to pause your crafting during the final stretch

* Agatha Christie’s original novel, which did not feature Miss Marple

* The other adaptations, including the 1997 television film and the 2020 version starring Rufus Sewell

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 5 out of 5Where to watch: BritBoxEpisode: Season 5, Episode 1Length: Approximately 88 minutesTV rating: TV-14

Best Gothic Period Drama: The Woman in White

Our gothic period drama pick is the 2018 adaptation of Wilkie Collins’s novel.

We chat about:

* Walter Hartright’s unsettling encounter with Anne Catherick before taking a teaching position at Limmeridge House

* Laura Fairlie’s resemblance to Anne and her engagement to the secretive Sir Percival Glyde

* Marian Halcombe, family secrets, romance, and the mystery surrounding the two women

* The art, decor, countryside, and quieter moments that brought some coziness to the darkness

* Why I don’t think the ratings do this adaptation justice

* Jessie Buckley, Olivia Vinall, Ben Hardy, Dougray Scott, Charles Dance, and Riccardo Scamarcio

* The part of the mystery that frustrated me….without spoiling it!

My rating: 4.75 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 3.5 out of 5Where to watch: PBS MASTERPIECELength: Five-part miniseries

Best Classic Cozy Movie: Murder, She Said

My classic movie pick is Murder, She Said (1961), starring Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple.

We chat about:

* The adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 4.50 from Paddington, published in the U.S. as What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw!

* The film’s decision to have Marple witness the murder herself

* A missing body, clues along the railway, and an investigation at Ackenthorpe Hall

* Miss Marple going undercover as a maid

* Her hilarious relationship with the cheeky young Alexander

* Margaret Rutherford’s wit and refusal to let anyone walk all over her

* Why the black-and-white presentation adds to the comfort for me

This isn’t specifically a Halloween story, but it’s a lovely option for a gentle mystery evening during spooky season.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 5 out of 5Where to watch: BritBoxLength: Approximately 86 minutes

Best Cozy-Spooky Mystery: Midsomer Murders — “The Witches of Angel’s Rise”

Our Acorn TV pick takes us to a village psychic fair.

We chat about:

* A fair established in memory of a family’s daughter

* A body discovered surrounded by ritual symbols

* Psychics, tarot readings, witch covens, and an academic who studies the occult

* Graveyards, a cold case, a masked killer, and more mysterious deaths

* Neil Dudgeon’s John Barnaby and Nick Hendrix’s Jamie Winter

* Why I enjoyed the mystery despite a few supporting performances that didn’t quite work for me

* Watching this case without catching up on the entire series

If occult themes aren’t for you, this may be one to skip.

My rating: 4.25 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 4.25 out of 5Where to watch: Acorn TVEpisode: Season 22, Episode 6Length: Approximately 89 minutesTV rating: TV-14

Best Not-So-Cozy Pick: Midwinter of the Spirit

This 2015 supernatural crime drama stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Merrily Watkins, a vicar, single mother, and trainee exorcist.

We chat about:

* A gruesome murder investigation that begins threatening Merrily’s own family

* Grief complicated by her late husband’s infidelity

* The mother-daughter relationship at the heart of the story

* Merrily’s responsibilities as both a parent and a priest

* Anna Maxwell Martin’s performance and the ensemble, including David Threlfall, Sally Messham, Nicholas Pinnock, Kate Dickie, and Siobhan Finneran

* Why this is a much darker watch than a comforting village mystery

My rating: 4 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 2 out of 5Where to watch: BritBoxLength: One season, three episodesRelease year: 2015TV rating: TV-14

Best Halloween Detective Mystery: Inspector Lewis — “Falling Darkness”

This Halloween case was a first-time watch for me and it kept me hooked!

We chat about:

* A murder involving vampire imagery and someone from Dr. Laura Hobson’s past

* Lewis and Hathaway investigating a case with personal connections

* The twists, performances, and relationships that made this such an absorbing mystery

* Oxford’s setting bringing some comfort despite the darkness

* Why this is a “put your crafting down” episode

* A familiar face for Father Brown fans: Alex Price, who plays Sid

* Kevin Whately’s appearance in the UK adaptation of Graham Norton’s Forever Home

I’m keeping the ending to myself, but it had me on the edge of my seat!

My rating: 5 out of 5 starsMy cozy rating: 3.5 out of 5Where to watch: BritBoxEpisode: Season 4, Episode 4; PBS numbering lists it as Season 3, Episode 5Length: Approximately 89 minutes; editions may varyRelease year: 2010TV rating: TV-14 on the BritBox season listing through Prime Video; ratings vary by edition

My Halloween-Night Choice: Tommy & Tuppence — Episodes 5–6

My personal choice is the final two episodes of the 2026 Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, starring Antonia Thomas, Josh Dylan, and Imelda Staunton.

This recommendation is for viewers who have already started the series. I suggest watching the earlier episodes first.

We chat about:

* A final mystery drawing on By the Pricking of My Thumbs

* A personal tragedy, a mysterious painting, and a cold case

* The fall fashion, Halloween costumes, party, and decorations

* Why episode 5 was one of my favorites of the season

* Why episode 6’s ending didn’t work quite as well for me

* The romance storyline and where it leaves our detective duo

* How this still felt cozy to me despite a child-kidnapping storyline

* My small request for a little more variety in the swear words!

Episode 5 rating: 4.75 out of 5 starsEpisode 6 rating: 4 out of 5 starsCozy rating for the pair: 4 out of 5Where to watch: BritBoxEpisodes: Season 1, Episodes 5–6Length: Approximately 90 minutes combinedRelease year: 2026TV rating: TV-MA

Streaming availability, runtimes, ratings, and episode numbering can vary by service and location.
