Trump Modifies 50% Tariffs on Certain Canadian Products

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on October 23, 2026, revising the scope of additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products. The administration says the changes are intended to counter Canada’s alleged discriminatory trade practices and protect American businesses and workers.

Under the proclamation, certain Canadian goods will be removed from the additional tariff list, while other products will become subject to the 50% duties. The revised tariffs will take effect on October 30, 2026, and will apply in addition to existing tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

The proclamation follows earlier tariff actions in July and September 2026. Trump said the adjustments were based on recommendations from senior administration officials and were intended to ensure the tariffs continue to offset disadvantages to U.S. commerce while serving the public interest. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will oversee implementation and make any necessary updates to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
