Trump Administration Launches America First Seafood Strategy
The Trump administration has unveiled its America First Seafood Strategy and launched Seafood.gov to support U.S. fishermen, strengthen domestic seafood production, and improve access to federal industry resources.
The strategy aims to modernize seafood-processing infrastructure, reduce regulatory barriers, combat unfair foreign competition, and expand international markets for American seafood. It also highlights efforts to support fisheries such as Maine’s lobster industry and strengthen seafood processing in rural Alaska communities.
The Food and Drug Administration is proposing a voluntary “U.S. Caught Seafood” label to help consumers identify seafood harvested by American fishermen. Additionally, the administration is making more than $5 billion in USDA-guaranteed loans available to support modernization and expansion of meat and seafood processing facilities.
The initiative builds on previous executive actions to expand commercial fishing access, establish the USDA’s Office of Seafood, increase harvest quotas, and reduce regulatory restrictions. The administration says these measures are intended to improve the competitiveness of U.S. seafood producers and strengthen domestic supply chains.
