A federal prosecutor and an FBI agent took turns reading Matthew Farwell's text messages with Sandra Birchmore to a jury. Farwell told Sandra he figured she would have said no because she was young and that he got addicted. He used a tutoring story at the library as cover — prosecutors allege the relationship was physical there while Sandra was still in high school. Farwell told the FBI he absolutely would have been with Sandra in 2012. She was fourteen, turning fifteen. He repeatedly told Sandra to erase their conversations. The FBI agent on the stand testified that his actions meet the definition of aggravated statutory offense. Farwell was a mandated reporter — a law enforcement officer legally obligated to report the mistreatment of a minor. He has pleaded not guilty to federal charges.
