The first jury heard about unknown male DNA under one of Maggie Murdaugh's hands. SLED never tested further. At a pretrial hearing this week, the defense revealed DNA under both hands and on her cell phone recovered from the roadside. None of it belongs to Alex Murdaugh. The hearing also surfaced a statement the state had buried — a federal prisoner named Ryan Spencer North claiming $15,000-a-week pill sales to the Murdaugh family and tying Eddie Smith to a $165,000 debt with a violent drug gang. That statement arrived in a massive data dump three days before jury selection and was never pursued. A judge has now ordered Y-STR testing with a 90-day deadline. Alex Murdaugh faces retrial in April in Sumter County. He has pleaded not guilty.
