Where does a feeling actually come from, and what happens in the first thirty seconds of it?

The amygdala flags something before you know it. A second or two later the adrenaline is in, the heart is up, the blood is heading for the big muscles. That is not your body malfunctioning. That is your body being brilliant. Picture a campfire and somebody says, what was that. You want the person who feels the fear. Every feeling has a healthy end and an unhealthy end of the same stick, and we keep trying to chop the stick in half.

One thing to try: Take five seconds between the feeling and the reaction. Not to fix it. Just to let it finish arriving.
