Why was the Book of Hebrews written?
In this Biblical sermon excerpt on Hebrews 1:1–2, Pastor John Musgrave explains the historical background of Hebrews and why its original readers needed to understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ.
The Book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians to persevere in their faith and not abandon Jesus. Its original audience faced pressure to turn away from Christ and return to the familiar religious practices of the Old Testament. Why? Because confessing Jesus as King could come at a tremendous cost.
In this episode of The Gospel for Living, we explore the historical setting of Hebrews, the possible connection to Jewish Christians in Rome, the persecution associated with Emperor Nero, and the evidence that Hebrews may have been written before the destruction of Jerusalem's temple in AD 70.
We also consider the central message of Hebrews: Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God's promises and is superior to the Old Testament prophets, Moses, Joshua, the Levitical priesthood, and the old covenant. Because God has spoken to us through His Son, Christians have a firm foundation for their faith.
In this episode, you will learn:
Why the Book of Hebrews was written and what problem it addressed.
Who the original readers may have been and what they were experiencing.
How the historical background helps us understand Hebrews 1:1–2.
Why the coming of Jesus changed the way God's people relate to the Old Testament.
How God's revelation in His Son gives Christians confidence in their faith.
Why following Jesus faithfully matters even when doing so brings persecution.
Whether you are studying Hebrews, exploring the historical context of the New Testament, learning Biblical interpretation, or seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian faith, this teaching will help you understand why the message of Hebrews remains essential today.
