At SNIPPY 2026 in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, I sit down with veteran MUFON investigator and government document researcher Ben Moss for a fascinating look at the life, work, evidence, and legacy of longtime UFO researcher Ray Stanford.
Ben knew Ray personally for more than a decade. Along with Tony Angiola, he spent countless hours at Ray’s home recording conversations, examining material, and documenting his research. Ben says they ultimately accumulated hundreds of hours of audio and video preserving Ray’s stories and work for future researchers.
Ray Stanford’s involvement in the UFO mystery began when he was still a teenager in the 1950s. Ben discusses Ray’s early UFO encounter, witness documentation surrounding the sighting, his photography and film work, and his pioneering attempts to bring instruments such as magnetometers and other scientific equipment into UFO research.
But Ray’s interests went far beyond UFOs.
In this conversation we also explore his fascination with rockets, meteorites, archaeology and paleontology, including his remarkable ability to locate dinosaur tracks and fossils. Ray’s home became a virtual archive filled with decades of photographs, films, documents, specimens, artifacts, recordings, and research.
We also get into a more complicated part of Ray’s legacy.
Why did he hold so much of his evidence so closely? Ben explains that Ray could be extremely protective of his material, in part because people had taken things from his home and because he was concerned about his research being presented poorly. Ben and Tony even had to earn Ray’s trust before being given access to his work.
After Ray’s passing, Ben was allowed to go through portions of the enormous collection and preserve some of the material. Today, those recordings and archives may become extremely important for anyone hoping to seriously study Ray Stanford’s contribution to UFO history.
