I had some extra time in Sapa, so I decided to explore one of the city’s local markets and see what shopping here is really like. The first section was filled with incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables, but things quickly got more intense when I reached the meat and fish sections.
There were live fish, black chickens, raw meat sitting out without refrigeration, and fish being prepared right in the middle of the market. At one point, fish blood and guts were being poured directly into the walkway—and straight onto the path I was walking through.
But this Sapa market was about much more than food. The deeper I explored, the bigger it got. I found spices, clothes, shoes, toys, household goods, cafes, and seemingly everything else you could need.
It was one of the most interesting local markets I visited in Vietnam. Some of the food looked incredibly fresh, while other parts were definitely tough on the stomach.
So what do you think: fresh or gross? And would you eat food from this market?
