After more than eight hours of trekking through Sapa’s countryside and rice terraces, I finally arrived at my local guide Khu’s home. She opened her home to me for the night and gave me the chance to experience what daily life is really like in a mountain village in northern Vietnam.

I toured the homestay, helped prepare a traditional Vietnamese dinner, ate with Khu and her family, tried rice wine, and learned how everyone in the family contributes to cooking and daily life. After spending the night, I woke up to a homemade breakfast before packing up and continuing my Sapa adventure.

Staying with a local family was one of the most authentic experiences of my Vietnam trip and an unforgettable way to experience Sapa beyond the typical tourist attractions.
