The Reel Spooky Series continues with Mother's Instinct, the 1960s-set psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as Celine and Alice, two best friends and next-door neighbors whose idyllic suburban lives are shattered by a tragic accident.
What should bring the two women closer in grief instead drives a wedge between them, as quiet suspicion creeps into their decades-long friendship — was it really just an accident, or is something far darker happening right next door?
Joshua breaks down whether this Hitchcock-style remake of the 2018 Belgian original earns its slow-burn tension, digs into Hathaway and Chastain's icy, dueling performances, and discusses the last third which.............makes some interesting choices.
