On opening day of deer season in 1983, 18-year-old David Wilkey was shot to death in the woods of Bedford County, Virginia. Local authorities called it a hunting accident. The man who took him hunting, David Lee Fisher, filed a $100,000 accidental death claim two days later. Fisher, a former mob associate living under a federal witness protection identity, had insured Wilkey's life after the teenager refused to take part in another murder-for-insurance plot. It took an insurance lawyer who read the autopsy report, an informant wearing a wire in Charlotte coffee houses, and an FBI investigation to prove what really happened. This episode traces the hunting trip, the scheme behind it, and the case that ended in a capital murder conviction. Part of The FBI Files, based on real case history.
