Suffering is real, and there is not one of us who has not been impacted by it. But as believers in Jesus Christ, we have an eternal hope that reaches beyond the temporary pains of this life. Continuing from “Heirs with Christ,” this teaching returns to Romans 8:16–17 to consider the Spirit’s witness that we are children of God and what it means to suffer with Christ. We begin examining why suffering occurs: life in a fallen world, our own sin and foolish decisions, the sins of others, and the loving correction of the Lord. Along the way, we look at the wisdom of Proverbs for preventing unnecessary suffering, our responsibility to pray and live faithfully within society, and the treatment of the Jewish people in light of the judgment of the nations in Matthew 25. God has not left us to ourselves. His wisdom, mercy, and correction call us to draw near to Him, respond to the Holy Spirit, and keep Christ Himself as our goal. This first part prepares the way for the continuation, where the foundational aspect of suffering with Christ and the glory to come will be explored further.
