Pessah in the Shadow of The War
היום אני רוצה לדבר איתככם על פסח.
Today, I want to talk with you about Passover.
קודם כל, לחג הפסח יש כמה שמות בעברית, וכל שם אומר לנו משהו על החג.
First of all, Passover has several names in Hebrew, and each one tells us something about the holiday.
חג האביב – בגלל שהוא קורה באביב,
Spring Festival — because it takes place in spring,
חג המצות – כי אוכלים מצות,
Matzah Festival — because we eat matzah,
חג החירות – כי עם ישראל יצא מעבדות לחופש.
Freedom Festival — because the people of Israel went from slavery to freedom.
בימים שלפני החג, כולם מנקים טוב טוב את הבית ומנסים להיפטר מכל החמץ.
In the days before the holiday, everyone cleans their home thoroughly and tries to get rid of all chametz (leavened food).
יש אפילו משפחות שאוכלות הרבה עוגות, פסטה ולחם בשבוע שלפני החג — כדי לסיים את הכול.
Some families even eat lots of cakes, pasta, and bread in the week before — just to finish everything.
עוד משהו חשוב: בפסח מבשלים מאכלים מיוחדים.
Another important thing: during Passover, people cook special dishes.
הכי מצחיק זה במשפחות מעורבות, כשיש גם מזרחיים וגם אשכנזים:
The funniest is in mixed families, with both Mizrahi and Ashkenazi traditions:
אפשר לראות על השולחן גם מרק עם קניידלך למנה ראשונה,
You can see matzah ball soup on the table as a starter,
ואחר כך קציצות פרסה של טורקים,
And then leek patties from Turkish tradition,
דג חריף של מרוקאים ועוד כל מיני דברים טעימים.
Spicy Moroccan fish and many other delicious dishes.
אבל השנה, הכול מרגיש קצת אחרת. אי אפשר לדבר על פסח בלי לדבר על המלחמה.
But this year, everything feels a bit different. You can’t talk about Passover without talking about the war.
בישראל, יש הרבה משפחות שהכיסאות שלהן סביב השולחן יישארו ריקים.
In Israel, many families will have empty seats around the table.
יש חיילים שנמצאים עדיין בחזית ולא יוכלו לחגוג עם המשפחה,
Some soldiers are still on the front line and won’t be able to celebrate with their families,
ויש גם כאלה שלא יחזרו בכלל.
And some will not return at all.
אולי גם בפסח נשמע אזעקות וטילים.
Maybe even during Passover, we will hear sirens and rockets.
ואולי יש משפחות שיעשו את הסדר במקלט?
And maybe some families will hold the Seder in a shelter?
אבל לא משנה איפה: כולנו נשב ביחד בליל הסדר,
But no matter where, we will all sit together on Seder night,
זה רגע מאוד חשוב ויפה:
It’s a very important and beautiful moment:
קוראים ביחד, ילדים ומבוגרים, את ההגדה כדי להיזכר בסיפור של עם ישראל.
We read together — children and adults — the Haggadah to remember the story of the people of Israel.
