Grief can be complicated—especially when the person you lost was also connected to some of the pain you've had to heal from.

Today would have been my mom's birthday, and in this deeply personal episode of The Becoming Series, I'm talking about what it means to love someone while still acknowledging the ways they hurt you.

You can miss someone and grieve the relationship you wish you could have had. You can understand someone's trauma without excusing their behavior. You can have compassion for what they experienced while still honoring the impact their actions had on you.

In this episode, I talk about complicated grief, boundaries, childhood trauma, hyper-independence, finding your voice, taking responsibility for your own healing, and what it means to break generational patterns.

At some point, healing can shift the question from “Why did this happen to me?” to “What am I going to do with what happened to me?”

You may not have chosen what happened to you, but you get a say in what happens next. You can become the person you needed, create safety for yourself, and decide which patterns end with you.

Loving someone doesn't mean they didn't hurt you. And acknowledging that they hurt you doesn't mean you never loved them. Both can be true.

Healing the past. Empowering your future. 💜
