The Clear Countertop: What does our obsession with order say about us?

Dela

Why does clearing off the kitchen counter feel so ridiculously satisfying?

This week, Rachel starts with something very ordinary: her husband has been away, and she’s spent the week reorganizing closets, putting things away and clearing off countertops. What started as a little household reset got her wondering about something much bigger.

What is it about creating order around us that can make us feel better? Is clutter actually stressful, or do we reach for organization when we're already craving a little more control? And why are we so fascinated right now with Sunday resets, perfectly organized homes, domesticity and the picture-perfect lives filling our social feeds?

Rachel explores the psychology and culture behind our obsession with order, including the renewed fascination with traditional domesticity and the rise of the tradwife aesthetic—not to argue for or against any particular lifestyle, but to ask a more interesting question: what are we actually craving when we watch someone turn chaos into order?

Maybe it's control. Maybe it's completion. Maybe it's relief.

Or maybe we just really like a clean countertop.
