Apple-Roasting is a short story set in a snug village where the Vicar and the Squire host an autumn tradition of roasting apples over a crackling hearth. The Squire's well of tales runs dry, so the villagers invent a game — whoever's apple burns first must take up the storytelling. When a kind-hearted matron with a lapful of children becomes the unlikely next narrator, the whole room leans in, drawn by firelight, the scent of roasting fruit, and the quiet magic of a story about to begin.
