Reacting alongside commentary from The Bulwark, Hawk's point is less about the claim itself than the silence around it: a sitting president publicly alleged that his predecessor used the federal government to try to have him killed, and Hawk says he could find only a single news article covering it.
He connects the claim to the Supreme Court's immunity ruling, noting that Trump's own attorney argued a president ordering the military to kill a political rival could be an official, unprosecutable act, and that the Court barred courts from examining a president's motives, a principle Hawk ties to the flood of pardons now being issued.
