The problem, as Smith calmly explained and Senator Amy Klobuchar later confirmed, is that Smith was not at a Hawks game in Atlanta at all. He was at a University of Maryland game against the Iowa Hawkeyes to watch Caitlin Clark. Schmitt had confused the Hawks with the Hawkeyes, and his staff's supposed smoking-gun texts did not even mention Atlanta or come from Smith.
Hawk walks through the exchange, the reaction from journalists across the spectrum, and the way MAGA media briefly tried to spin the meltdown as a win before the community notes arrived. His larger point: with five weeks to go, this is what Senate Republicans chose to spend their time on.
