His point is about timing and substance. Roughly six weeks before the midterms, with Trump's approval mired in the low 30s and Republicans distancing themselves from him, a public hearing invites Smith to walk through, on national television, the classified-documents case at Mar-a-Lago and the four-count indictment over efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Hawk notes Smith has said he stands by those decisions and would bring the cases again.
Hawk contrasts the hearing with what the Senate is not doing on affordability, gas prices, and the Iran war, and reminds viewers that the only reasons Trump avoided trial were his 2024 win and the Supreme Court's immunity ruling. He previews covering the hearing live on Tuesday.
