On the evening of November 13, 1974, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. ran into his regular bar on Merrick Road in Amityville and told the men at the counter that his parents had been shot. By the next afternoon he had given detectives the rifle, the pillowcase, and a confession. He also asked them what he would have to do to collect on his father's life insurance.

His lawyer put an insanity defense in front of a jury. DeFeo took the stand and said he killed them all in self-defense, that when he held a gun there was no doubt who he was. The prosecutor asked if it felt good. He said yes.

Six life sentences, served back to back. From prison he blamed Dawn, his mother, unnamed friends. He fabricated a marriage. A judge called his sworn testimony false and fabricated. He died in 2021 at sixty-nine, still serving the sentences. The parole board turned him down every time.
