Bryan Kohberger initialed nine pages of plea paperwork when he pleaded guilty to the University of Idaho murders in July 2025. One question on the plea form asked whether he'd been coerced, and he checked "no."

A year later, his petition accused his own defense team of coercing him and claimed he's innocent. Judge Steven Hippler cleared the whole schedule on October 14, 2026, and no hearing is on the calendar.

Before the plea, lead attorney Anne Taylor warned Hippler in a sealed memo that her client couldn't rationally assess the case. She asked for more time, and Hippler denied it. The court has ordered that memo shared with prosecutors.

Prosecutors want the petition dismissed outright with no hearing. They call it bare and unsupported, and they say Idaho law doesn't recognize his claim of innocence.

I'm joined by Robin Dreeke, former chief of the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, and trial attorney Bob Motta on whether prosecutors can kill this petition on paper.
