Had the Anna Kepner case stayed in juvenile court, her stepbrother Timothy Hudson would have been released by 21 with no criminal record. Instead, he's in federal court as an adult, charged with first-degree murder.

Anna was 18 when she died in November 2025 during a family cruise on the Carnival Horizon, and he was 16. He's pleaded not guilty, and a conviction at trial means life.

The judge has set January 15, 2027, as Hudson's hard deadline for a plea. If he doesn't enter one, his trial starts January 25. Hudson's legal team says it can't advise him either way while one issue is pending.

Prosecutors point to surveillance footage and DNA evidence, which the defense calls circumstantial. Reports suggest he could get 24 to 30 years through a plea deal.

Retired FBI agent Robin Dreeke and defense attorney Bob Motta sit down with me to get into how a teenager weighs a deal like that against life.
