Late last night, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump announced a press conference in Inglewood, California, to renew and double down on the call for federal intervention in the Nolan Xavier Wells case.
Crump announced that U.S. Representative Maxine Waters and AAPI Executive Director Cynthia Choi would join Nolan’s parents, Christine Wells Wesley and Elmore Wesley, in demanding action from the federal government. Unfortunately, Congresswoman Waters was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. We’ll address that before the opposition attempts to spin her absence into a negative narrative, but her absence does not change the purpose of today’s press conference or the growing demand for answers.
In this episode, we’ll break down the press conference and what Benjamin Crump, Cynthia Choi, Christine Wells Wesley and Elmore Wesley had to say. Nearly every speaker returned to two major issues: the grand jury proceedings and the findings from the autopsies performed in Nolan’s case.
Both the state medical examiner’s findings and the independent examination involving Dr. Roger Mitchell remain central to the family’s demand for further investigation. The family and its legal team continue to emphasize that Nolan’s cause and manner of passing have not been conclusively established as drowning and that unanswered questions remain.
The message from the family and its supporters remains clear: they want Mississippi District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath to reopen the investigation into Nolan Xavier Wells’ passing, and they are calling on federal authorities, including the FBI, to launch an independent investigation or take over the case.
We’ll go through the major statements from today’s press conference, the questions surrounding the grand jury and autopsy findings, and why Nolan’s family continues to insist that this case is far from over.
