Splash Stories enjoyed an intriguing chat with Hugh Cornwell about all things music, arts & the culture close to his heart.
Hugh mentioned attending The legendary Rainbow Theatre in London to see Chuck Berry thanks to his mentor mate Richard Thomson, who'd taught him to play bass at school. Turned out he saw The Nashville Teens first on with No 1 record Tobacco Road, The Animals with No 1 record House of the Rising Son the week before, The Moody Blues with Go Now another No 1 then The Swinging Blue Jeans who got 'booed' [- no number 1 record!] then there was a pause before Chuck Berry came on..audience frustrated ...why? Well Chuck always counted the money before getting on stage part of his cash only deal and no doubt from hard lessons he's learned on the road ..
For me it was a full circle as we strolled down memory lane & discussed our first ever live show. Mine was seeing him in The Stranglers on the Raven Tour back in '79 at The Cambridge Corn Exchange and he shared a chuckle at that surprise.
Hugh talked working in Sweden...collaborations with JCC The Poet John Cooper Clarke...the man who hates travelling on public transport ... and recording the Jimmy Webb song track MacArthur Park with him. ..artwork design, his podcast https://mrdemillefm.com/clapperboard/ dedicated to his love of film history and cinema, with a particular focus on the people who make movies. His novel about an artist convinced his son was trying to kill him...written while travelling India and the Australian tour (Castlemaine / Melbourne / Sydney / Brisbane / Adelaide & Perth) & UK Dates...
