229 What if some Masonic symbols were meant to be read against the sky?

Dela

In the final chapter of The Autumn Mysteries, we investigate one of the boldest claims made by nineteenth-century interpreters of Freemasonry: that portions of Masonic symbolism correspond to the annual journey of the Sun through the zodiac.

And this time, Robert Hewitt Brown takes center stage.

In Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy, Brown doesn't merely mention astronomy. He attempts to map Masonic symbolism onto the heavens—connecting the equinoxes, solstices, zodiac, Royal Arch, Wisdom, Strength and Beauty, and other features of the Craft to an astronomical framework.

His illustrations make the argument visually.

But does that mean Brown discovered the original meaning of Freemasonry?

Not so fast.

We'll compare his interpretation with the ideas of Robert Taylor and Richard Carlile and ask where historical evidence ends and nineteenth-century interpretation begins.

Along the way we'll investigate why the zodiac mattered long before newspaper horoscopes: as a calendar, a system for tracking seasons, a tool for understanding celestial movement, and a framework through which ancient civilizations organized time.

Then we'll return to the lodge.

Why East and West?

Why Light and Darkness?

Why circumambulation?

Why the Seven Liberal Arts and Sciences?

Why does Astronomy appear in Masonic education at all?

And what are we supposed to make of Brown's extraordinary attempt to place Masonic ritual inside the annual cycle of the heavens?

We're not trying to prove that Freemasonry came from the zodiac.

We're asking a harder question:

Why did generations of Masonic writers become convinced that looking upward could help explain what was happening inside the lodge?
