226 Did Freemasonry Begin With the Men Who Hired the Masons? | Markham's Associate Theory

Dela

What if the missing link between operative and speculative Freemasonry wasn't found inside the operative lodge—but among the men surrounding the builders?

In this episode of Masonic Muscle: The Origin War, we investigate A. Geoffrey Markham's Associate Theory.

Markham directs our attention toward the social world surrounding major building projects: the craftsmen doing the work, the men supplying and organizing it, and the wealthy patrons financing it.

Could repeated contact between these groups have created a class of non-operative “Associate Masons”? And when the religious and building world of England changed during the Reformation, could those relationships have survived and gradually developed into something resembling speculative Freemasonry?

It's a plausible mechanism.

But where is the documentary bridge?

We examine:

  • Markham's Characteristics and Origins in Early Freemasonry
  • Donors, providers and operative builders
  • The proposed “Associate Mason”
  • The effects of the English Reformation
  • Religious guilds as a possible additional influence
  • The problem of the sixteenth-century documentary gap
  • Contact versus actual Masonic participation
  • What evidence would be needed to demonstrate continuity

Markham changes where we search.

Carr tells us to look inside the operative lodge. Markham tells us to look around it.

But working with masons doesn't automatically make someone a Mason.

No verdict. We put the theory under the weight and see what the evidence can carry.

And because we've already investigated Cyril N. Batham's Monastic Theory, we'll move next to Peter S. E. Sandbach's Darwinian Concept and a radically different question:

What if nobody invented speculative Freemasonry? What if it evolved?
