The Autumn Equinox is approaching. Why did Masonic writers such as James Anderson, Robert Taylor, Richard Carlile, and Robert Hewitt Brown repeatedly connect Masonry with geometry, nature, light, the heavens, and the cultivation of the mind?
This special investigation follows the changing season into one of the stranger corners of Masonic thought.
We begin with a simple astronomical event: the balance of light and darkness at the autumnal equinox. From there, we examine Anderson’s Constitutions, the importance of geometry and ordered creation, and the later astronomical interpretations proposed by Taylor, Carlile, and Brown.
Were these writers recovering an older symbolic language—or reading meanings into Freemasonry that were never originally there?
That distinction matters.
This episode does not attempt to prove that Freemasonry originated in ancient astronomy. Instead, we put the astronomical interpretation on the examination table and ask what the documents actually allow us to say.
