225 Did Freemasonry Come From the Monasteries? | Cyril Batham Challenges the Transition Theory

Dela

What if one of the most widely accepted explanations for the origins of Freemasonry became accepted without ever being proved?

In this episode of Masonic Muscle: The Origin War — The Great Investigation, we examine Brother Cyril N. Batham's Monastic Origins Theory and his direct challenge to Harry Carr's famous Transition Theory.

Carr argued that speculative Freemasonry gradually evolved from operative masonry. Batham wasn't convinced.

In his 1992 Philalethes Lecture, Batham argued that the surviving English evidence does not demonstrate operative lodges gradually transforming into speculative ones. Even more provocatively, Batham claimed that Carr privately admitted to him that there was “not a shadow of proof” for the Transition Theory. That statement comes to us through Batham's account, however—not an independent surviving statement from Carr. The Origin of Freemasonry Cyril N Batham part 1.docxDOCX

But Batham then faces the same problem.

His alternative theory proposes that learned “Inner Sancta” within medieval monasteries may have survived Henry VIII's Dissolution as secret cells, eventually emerging in a form that contributed to speculative Freemasonry.

And Batham openly admitted:

So we're putting both theories under the barbell.

We investigate the monasteries, Old Charges, clerical connections to medieval building, Elias Ashmole's 1646 initiation, the Scottish-versus-English evidence problem, and the crucial difference between evidence, inference, historical reconstruction, and proof. Batham may not have solved the origins of Freemasonry.

But did he expose a serious weakness in the accepted solution?

Listen. Examine the evidence. Make up your own mind.
