Robert Devine led Sandra Birchmore’s youth program. After she was dead, he attacked her credibility at his own disciplinary hearing — calling a woman who could no longer speak for herself a liar. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines what that choice reveals about Devine and the broader dynamic among the Stoughton officers allegedly involved with Sandra. Devine didn’t just run the program — he allegedly mentored both Farwell brothers as teenagers, years before those officers targeted Sandra through the same program. William Farwell, Matthew’s twin, allegedly engaged with Sandra while knowing she was pregnant with his brother’s baby. Scott, author of Nightbird, explains what being passed between multiple authority figures does to a person’s sense of what is real and normal. Three officers, one department, one program, one girl. Scott confronts why the instinct to discredit the person who was harmed often outlasts the person herself.
