For those of a certain age, the title of this episode may have a familiar tune running through your head. But how comfortable are we introverts with admitting what we really, really want? Somewhere along the line, many of us learnt that wanting was selfish, so we became rather adept at being reasonable, keeping the peace and hoping others would somehow work out what we needed. I have been reminded recently that this can leave emotions bubbling away until they erupt, usually when we would much rather avoid a difficult conversation. The real work is learning to distinguish needs from wants, notice when something is not sitting right, and find the courage to speak up calmly and clearly. Our personal agency begins when we recognise that we have both the right and the responsibility to ask.
