Before the Premier League, before the World Cup, before the Champions League, there was 1863.
In this episode of Turning Points, we go back to Victorian England to explore the foundation of the Football Association (FA) and the moment an increasingly popular but chaotic game began its journey towards becoming the sport we know today.
In the 19th century, there was no single set of football rules. Different schools, clubs and regions played the game in very different ways. Some allowed handling the ball, others encouraged hacking opponents, while disputes over what actually constituted "football" were commonplace.
Against this backdrop, representatives from London's football clubs and schools met in Freemasons' Tavern in October 1863 to establish a common set of laws.
But agreeing on the rules was far from straightforward.
