Turning Points: How Mark Robins Saved Alex Ferguson

On 7 January 1990, Manchester United travelled to Nottingham Forest for an FA Cup third-round tie. It looked like a routine cup match — but it would become one of the most important games in the history of English football.

Alex Ferguson was under enormous pressure. Manchester United had endured a difficult start to the 1989–90 season, and Ferguson’s position as manager was increasingly under threat. The FA Cup was becoming his last realistic chance to save his job.

Then came Mark Robins.

With United trailing and their season hanging by a thread, Robins scored the only goal of the game at the City Ground. Manchester United went on to win the FA Cup, beating Crystal Palace in the final after a replay — and Ferguson survived.

The rest, of course, is history.

Six years later, Manchester United had won the Premier League three times. By 1999, Ferguson had delivered the club’s historic treble. By the time he retired in 2013, he had become one of the greatest managers in football history.

But what if Robins hadn't scored?

In this episode of Turning Points, we explore the story behind one of football's greatest sliding-doors moments. How close was Ferguson really to being sacked? Why was the 1989–90 season so difficult? How did the FA Cup transform Manchester United's fortunes? And could the entire Ferguson era have unfolded differently without that one goal?

We also examine the wider impact of Ferguson's eventual success — from Manchester United's dominance of English football to the Premier League era, the Class of '92, the 1999 Treble and Ferguson's extraordinary legacy.

Did Mark Robins really save Alex Ferguson?

And if he did, did one goal change the history of English football forever?
