Turning Points: The 1927 FA Cup Final | Cardiff City Make History

On 23 April 1927, something happened that had never happened before — and has never happened since.

Cardiff City became the only Welsh club to win the FA Cup, defeating Arsenal 1–0 at Wembley in one of the most remarkable finals in the history of the competition.

But the 1927 FA Cup Final was a landmark for another reason too: it was the first FA Cup Final to be broadcast live on radio, bringing the biggest game in English football into homes across Britain for the very first time.

In this episode, we travel back to the 1920s to explore the story of Cardiff City, Arsenal and the FA Cup, the rise of Welsh football, the packed Wembley crowd and the extraordinary moment when Wales conquered England's most prestigious domestic cup competition.

How did Cardiff City reach the final? Why was the FA Cup so important in the 1920s? What made Cardiff such a formidable side? And how did Hughie Ferguson's famous winning goal make history?

We also look at the emergence of football on the radio and how broadcasting would begin to transform the relationship between football and its supporters — ultimately laying the foundations for the television age, the Premier League and the modern football media industry.

The 1927 FA Cup Final was therefore a turning point in more ways than one: Cardiff City made Welsh football history on the pitch, while radio was changing how millions experienced football off it.
