Turning Points: The 1999 Women’s World Cup | The Game That Changed Women’s Football

In 1999, women’s football stepped onto the world stage in a way it never had before.

The 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States became a landmark tournament, culminating in one of the most iconic moments in football history: Brandi Chastain’s winning penalty for the USA against China in the final, celebrated in front of more than 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl.

But the story of the 1999 Women’s World Cup goes far beyond that famous photograph.

In this episode of Turning Points, we explore the tournament itself — the USA’s success, China’s rise, the packed stadiums, the growth of television coverage and the extraordinary impact the competition had on the visibility of women’s football.

But to understand why 1999 mattered, we need to go much further back.

We trace the history of the women’s game, from the women’s football boom during the First World War, when huge crowds watched teams such as Dick, Kerr Ladies, to the FA’s 1921 ban on women’s football, which effectively pushed the game to the margins for decades.

We then follow the long road back: the revival of women’s football, the creation of the Women’s World Cup in 1991, the development of international competitions and the growing professionalisation of the game.

And where did it all lead?

Eventually, to the FA Women’s Super League (WSL), professional clubs, record attendances, major television deals and women’s football becoming an increasingly important part of the modern game.

So was the 1999 Women’s World Cup the moment that changed everything — or simply one crucial step in a much longer fight for recognition?
