Tai-Ex opening
The Tai-Ex opened up 161-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
46,454 on turnover of 9-billion N-T.
The market lost ground (下跌;走低) again on Tuesday ahead of the October futures
contracts settlement date (結算日).
And investors opted to (選擇;決定) trim their holdings before the settlement amid
concerns more foreign institutional selling will follow and funds will be
pulled out of Taiwan due to a stronger U-S dollar.
Premier says donated patrol vessel will not patrol waters near Taiwan
Premier Cho Jung-tai says a patrol vessel (巡邏艦艇) donated by the Coast Guard
Administration to the Philippines will not be used in waters near Taiwan or
areas where Taiwan-registered fishing vessels operate.
Speaking at a legislative hearing, Cho said the Philippines pledged (承諾)
during the donation process that the vessel would be used only for designated
missions and would not operate in waters related to Taiwan.
But the premier also said the vessel could even provide assistance to Taiwan
if needed.
The Coast Guard Administration confirmed on September 16 that it donated a
retired patrol vessel to the Philippines.
The 500-tonne-class vessel was commissioned into the Philippine Coast Guard
on October 2.
Work halted at TSMC Kaohsiung fab site following fatal accident
An investigation is underway at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's
Fab 22 site in Kaohsiung following a workplace accident that killed four
workers.
Steel lifting and installation work at the affected construction project has
been suspended.
The four men fell while installing steel structures (鋼構;鋼製結構) at the site in
Nanzi District, part of the Southern Taiwan Science Park.
The park bureau says bolts connecting a steel structure may have broken,
causing the workers and steel components to fall.
The Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau says labor inspectors have visited
the site and are investigating the incident.
WSJ: Musk personally ordered satellite slowdown that crippled Ukraine's
drone defenses
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Elon Musk personally ordered the
throttling (限速;限制傳輸速度) of Starshield — the military-grade version of SpaceX's
Starlink satellite network — capping speeds and leaving some Ukrainian drones
virtually inoperable (無法運作的).
Both Musk and US President Donald Trump have denied giving the order, with
Musk pointing the finger at the Pentagon and even the White House itself.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told US Secretary of State Marco
Rubio that Starshield access needs to be restored, describing the disruption
as gambling with Ukrainian lives.
Nick Harper reports from Washington.
Italy Pompeii Home to restored Through Private Sponsor
A private home in Pompeii, believed to be the grandest (最宏偉的;最豪華的), is being
restored with $1.6 million US dollars from a private sponsor.
The house belonged to Marcus Fabius Rufus, who was believed to be a
magistrate or a freedman of the imperial household.
Modeled after Rome’s imperial palaces, the house has been closed to the
public since 1980.
Now part of it is expected to open to guided groups by Christmas.
A German entrepreneur, Frank Hoefer, is funding the renovation (翻修;整修) after
reading a book by the site's superintendent.
Officials hope to expand such sponsorships to develop the site.
Current renovations focus on frescoes, including the famous Venus of Pompeii,
and making the complex more accessible.
