Is AI about to come alive and rise up against us? Jerry Kaplan has worked in artificial intelligence since earning one of the field’s first PhDs in 1979, and he thinks the public debate has become “a real clown show.”

In conversation with Quillette editor-in-chief Claire Lehmann, Kaplan explains the difference between chatbots that “can bark but can’t bite” and AI agents that act in the world, and argues that the real near-term risks are cybersecurity, fraud and weak product liability rather than superintelligence. They also discuss AI consciousness, why intelligence is not the same as power, what AI is already doing to productivity and research, and why Kaplan believes human craft will become more valuable, not less.
