A Great Dane may approach visitors with completely friendly intentions—but when an enormous adolescent rushes through a doorway, jumps, pulls, barks, or swings its powerful tail, ordinary excitement can quickly become unsafe or intimidating.

In Episode 6 of the Great Dane Health Academy, we explore how to build calm manners, confidence, cooperation, and reliable household behavior in a physically powerful but emotionally sensitive giant dog.

You’ll learn how to stop a Great Dane from jumping, improve loose-leash walking, prevent door rushing, strengthen recall, manage visitors, teach settling, reduce excessive barking, and guide an adolescent dog that already looks adult but remains emotionally immature.

The episode explains why Great Dane training should never depend on greater physical force. Instead, owners can use reward-based learning, clear household rules, environmental management, short successful repetitions, and predictable routines before the dog’s size makes unwanted behavior difficult to control.

We also discuss socialization, fear, watchfulness, separation-related distress, crate and barrier comfort, counter surfing, food stealing, object exchange, chewing, resource guarding, children, babies, older adults, other dogs, small dogs, cats, dog parks, and safe visitor introductions.

Discover why punishing growling can remove an important warning signal, why another dog cannot automatically solve separation problems, and why socialization should create calm emotional stability rather than force the Great Dane to greet every person or animal.

You’ll also learn how cooperative care, paw handling, nail training, mouth and ear checks, vehicle access, scale training, veterinary preparation, and positive muzzle conditioning can make lifelong health care safer for the dog, family, and veterinary team.

Sudden irritability, handling resistance, stair refusal, vehicle hesitation, withdrawal, restlessness, or new aggression may sometimes reflect pain, sensory change, neurologic problems, or another medical condition rather than simple disobedience.

Great Dane training is not about suppressing the breed’s affectionate, expressive personality. It is about teaching an enormous dog how to move safely, settle calmly, accept care, and cooperate confidently within a human household.
