A Great Dane puppy may look gentle, clumsy, and manageable during its first days at home—but within only a few months, the same jumping, pulling, chewing, and handling habits will belong to an enormous adolescent dog.

In Episode 2 of the Great Dane Health Academy, we explore how to raise a Great Dane puppy through rapid growth, early socialization, controlled exercise, household training, body handling, and the transition toward adult size.

You’ll learn why the goal should never be to make a Great Dane grow as large or as quickly as possible, how to monitor body condition during giant-breed development, and why extra food, calcium, mineral powders, or growth supplements can create unnecessary nutritional imbalance.

The episode explains measured meals, large- or giant-breed puppy nutrition, rapid eating, training treats, sleep, toilet training, crate or safe-area routines, chewing, object stealing, calm exchanges, time-alone preparation, and early awareness of gastric dilatation-volvulus or GDV.

We also discuss safe puppy exercise, slippery floors, stairs, furniture, vehicle access, long limbs, immature coordination, paws, nails, grooming, mouth handling, ears, recall, door safety, leash walking, visitor routines, barking, and stopping jumping before the puppy becomes physically giant.

Discover how to socialize a Great Dane puppy around children, adults, dogs, cats, vehicles, veterinary environments, different surfaces, household sounds, and brief periods of independence without forcing overwhelming interaction.

You’ll also learn why Great Dane adolescence can be especially deceptive: the dog may appear physically adult while its skeleton, coordination, confidence, judgment, and emotional regulation are still developing.

Raising a Great Dane puppy well means controlling physical growth while building the confidence, manners, handling skills, and household routines the dog will need before its body becomes enormous.

Repeated unproductive retching, abdominal swelling, severe restlessness, drooling, weakness, or collapse may indicate GDV, a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate veterinary care.
