A healthy adult Great Dane may eat normally, enjoy walks, move comfortably, and show no obvious signs of disease—but preventive care is most valuable before a serious problem becomes visible.

In Episode 7 of the Great Dane Health Academy, we explain how to build a practical adult preventive-care system using veterinary baselines, organized health records, regular body checks, responsible screening, and early detection.

You’ll learn how to monitor weight, body condition, muscle, movement, exercise recovery, appetite, water intake, breathing, sleep, behavior, skin, teeth, eyes, ears, paws, nails, lumps, and tail injuries.

The episode explains why scale weight alone cannot define health, how a Great Dane can maintain the same weight while losing muscle, and why occasional videos of normal walking, turning, rising, and vehicle entry may become valuable when movement later changes.

We also discuss Great Dane cardiac monitoring, dilated cardiomyopathy awareness, family history, fainting, coughing, exercise intolerance, resting breathing observations, and the limitations of one normal heart examination.

Discover how to prepare for gastric dilatation-volvulus or GDV, why every Great Dane household should know the nearest emergency hospital and transport route, and why a previous preventive gastropexy does not make future abdominal distress harmless.

You’ll also learn about hip and thyroid evaluation, eye examinations, cancer and lump awareness, persistent lameness, dental prevention, skin and pressure areas, parasite control, vaccination planning, travel risks, medication records, supplements, microchip details, pet insurance, emergency savings, and vehicle access.

Preventive care cannot guarantee that a Great Dane will never develop GDV, heart disease, cancer, orthopedic problems, or neurologic disease. Its purpose is to create a living baseline that makes meaningful change easier to recognize and communicate.

Repeated unproductive retching, abdominal swelling, severe restlessness, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, pale or blue gums, sudden inability to walk, or rapidly progressing weakness may require immediate emergency veterinary care.
