A junior atmospheric technician is assigned to a single-room monitoring station on an exposed ridge in northern Colorado after the previous observer requests an immediate transfer and refuses to explain why. The first few nights are quiet. Then the instruments begin returning readings that should not exist — hard surfaces in the fog, at fixed positions, closing by exactly four metres every night. The Night Archivist presents her recovered observational log and one incomplete personnel file.
