A freight operator takes the overnight cargo rotation at a Foundation administrative complex after the previous operator resigns without explanation, leaving only his badge on the elevator floor and a brass button taped inside an empty envelope. On his fourth night, the elevator's floor-selector panel has nine buttons instead of eight. The ninth is warm to the touch and labeled with a floor that does not exist. Each night, its label changes — one floor closer. The Night Archivist presents the recovered shift log and one resignation letter that explains nothing.
This is a recovered Foundation encounter presented for slow nighttime listening.
