Your job is simple: wade the tidal channels, sample each rimstone pool, and log every mineral reading before sunrise.
The grotto is divided into three galleries. The Shallows hold nine charted pools fed by filtered seawater, their mineral content predictable and stable. The Cathedral stretches deeper, where bioluminescent algae clings to Jurassic limestone and the water grows colder with every step. And then there is The Font — the deepest gallery, where Pool 7 sits beneath a ceiling of ancient stalactites and the Foundation’s oldest standing directive: Do not taste any water from Pool 7 that registers sweet on the organoleptic assessment form.
You carry brass sampling bottles with cork stoppers, a set of white porcelain tasting cups, a serial-dilution kit, and a waterproof graphite pencil. You wade waist-deep through cold seawater, tasting each pool to catalog its mineral signature. The work is slow, methodical, and quiet. But as you move deeper, the Mineral Concentration Index climbs past values that shouldn’t exist in modern seawater — and the water begins to taste like something that hasn’t happened yet.
