Tonight, you descend nineteen limestone steps into a sealed chamber where a geothermal mineral spring has been breathing for longer than anyone can explain. The pool is six meters across, perfectly clear, faintly blue-green from dissolved trace minerals. The water holds at exactly 37.0°C — human body temperature — and has not deviated by more than two hundredths of a degree in fifty-five years of continuous monitoring. Every 8.2 seconds, the center of the pool rises in a slow, gentle dome and settles again. The Foundation has never determined where that rhythm comes from.
You are the overnight hydrological technician. Your job is simple: walk twelve measurement stations around the pool’s limestone rim every sixty minutes, read the water level, temperature, and conductivity at each tile, and fill a glass collection vial using a copper-handled dipper long enough to keep your hands from the surface. Standing Order #3 is clear — do not submerge bare skin past the wrist. The spring water is chemically ordinary. Every analysis returns a standard mineral profile for a deep geothermal source. The restriction exists for another reason.
On Night 15, the collection caddy slips from your damp hands and sinks to a ledge just past the retrieval hook’s reach. You roll up your sleeve and reach in to the shoulder. The water is body temperature. For eight seconds, you cannot feel where your arm ends and the spring begins. When you pull the caddy out, everything has changed. You can feel the shape of the pool below the surface — not through sonar, not through instruments, but through the water inside your own body. The spring has a depth no probe has ever returned from, and now you can feel every meter of it.
This is a single-episode encounter file — one testimony, one sealed facility, one quiet night beside a warm pool that breathes. Settle in and let the spring’s 8.2-second rhythm carry you down.
