A former cipher clerk describes nine months of overnight shifts in Cryptographic Processing Station CR-09 — a sealed, soundproofed vault on Sub-Level 2 of a Cold War–era signals facility. The job was purely clerical: receive encoded transmissions from the antenna array, transcribe them onto carbon paper, rotate the brass cipher wheel to verify each header, and file. Seven circuits per shift. A green light pulsing every 4.7 seconds. The quietest room in the building.
On Night 20, during a routine cipher wheel verification, the clerk felt something that wasn’t in the room and wasn’t in the headphones. An emotional pressure — urgency, certainty, focus — coming from the mathematical structure of the cipher itself. Not from the decoded content. From the pattern of the encryption. As if the person who encoded the transmission had left their feelings inside the mathematics of their work, the way a writer leaves their mood inside their handwriting. Except this wasn’t metaphor. It was measurable. Four clerks across three Foundation facilities independently reported identical emotional signatures for the same transmissions, with correlation coefficients above 0.87.
The Foundation calls it cryptopathic perception. The evaluation records, the measurement protocols, and the cipher room’s sixty-three-year operational history are all on file. So are the transmissions that carry a non-human emotional signature — transmissions that arrived three years before the cipher room was built. And a cipher key, embedded in concrete in 1944, thirteen years before the first transmission it decodes was ever received.
This is an original SCP-universe Encounter File designed for sleep. First-person testimony. Clinical Foundation documentation. No jumpscares, no sudden sounds. Just a sealed room underground, the clicking of a brass cipher wheel, carbon paper in metal filing cabinets, and the deep quiet of information at rest.
