On September 3, a lab released a new frontier model and graded it "Critical" for cyber capability, by its own threshold, on its own system card. Within days, Los Angeles Unified paused generative AI services for students in every grade. So is AI getting safer, or are the numbers just misleading?
Connor MacIvor reads the numbers the way he'd read a case file.
In this episode:
- Is the new model safer than the last one? Yes. Its malign-output rate is 3.4% against 18.8% for the previous model. And 3.4% still means three out of every 100 real tasks go somewhere you don't want.
- 99.7% sounds excellent on prompt injection. That's about 21 failures in 10,000. If your AI reads 10,000 emails this year, that's 21 chances for a stranger's email to steer it. A percentage is useless without a denominator, and nobody hands you the denominator.
- The district's move is a pause while it reviews instructional use and safeguards, not a verdict.
- The two clocks. The labs move in weeks. Institutions move in school years. Nobody is holding both watches.
- The global call for AI red lines: 200-plus signatories, 10 Nobel laureates, a deadline of the end of 2026. As of September 8, that was 114 days away, with no treaty.
- What a six-person shop should buy: no model yet. You don't have a model problem. You have a leak, and nobody's watching the inbox on a Saturday.
